Speakers at the St.Petersburg Economic Forum discussed prospects for western investors on the Russian market and Russia’s accession to the WTO. US Ambassador John Beyrle was buoyantly optimistic about Russia joining the World Trade Organization. Europe also welcomed Russia’s membership in the WTO. President Medvedev addressing the 15th St.Petersburg Economic Forum said that the stage in which the state came to play a greater role in the Russian economy is over.

Russian Railways to sell 10% of shares in 2013

The Russian Transport Ministry confirmed that it would sell 10% of theshares in the Russian Railways Company no later than 2013, TransportMinister Igor Levitin said, RIA Novosti reports.No details of the sale have been revealed. However, he said thatlegislative changes are needed because privatization of infrastructurecompanies is forbidden.The government plan involves sales of 25% + one share of the railwaycompany in 2013-2015.

Railway tunnel built in Sochi

A railway tunnel has been built between the Central and KhostinskyDistricts of Sochi on May 2. President of the Russian Railways CompanyVladimir Yakunin arrived for the opening, RIA Novosti reports.The tunnel is one of the main railway systems for the Olympic Games inSochi-2014. A parallel railway line will run through the tunnel. Thisincreases the capacity of trains per day from 54 to 153.

Russian Railways Company concludes railway maintenance from Russian border to Sukhumi

The Russian Railways and Abkhaz Railway companies have concludedmaintenance of the railway section from Veseloye to Sukhumi today,president of the Russian company Vladimir Yakunin said.The work started in February 2011. Over 130 km of railways werereconstructed and over 160 sets of points.600 carriages were used in the restoration process.

World Cup modernization of Russian railways may cost 1 trillion rubles

The Institute of Economy and Transport of the Russian Railways prepared a project for passenger railway transport for the 2018 World Cup . It may need an additional one trillion rubles, RIA Novosti reports. FIFA voted for Russia to host the cup. 13 cities may host the games: Moscow, Daint-Petersburg, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Samara, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar and Sochi.

Russian special representative to Middle East dismissed

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has dismissed Alexander Saltanov, the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and special representative to the Middle East. Saltanov has been operating in the region and North Africa for almost 10 years, RIA Novosti reports.

SCR to check conditions of routes and trains

South Caucasian Railways (SCR) will conduct a regular spring inspection of roads and railway structures, News Armenia reports referring to the press service of the company.The main focus during the inspection will be given to testing the emergency response activities, checking the sanitary facilities, repairing the tracks and training the employees.The South Caucasian Railways are a 100% subsidiary of Russian Railways.

Siemens starts producing electric trains

A factory of Siemens (Germany) in Krefeld (North Rhine-Westphalia) has started production of the Lastochka electric train for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, within the contract signed with the company Russian Railways, RIA Novosti reports. The first portion will consist of 38 trains, President of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin said.

Caucasus train stations to be fenced to prevent terrorism

The North Caucasian management of the Russian Railways Company plans to fence 53 train stations in the South and North Caucasian Federal Districts with a 50-meter security zone to prevent terrorist attacks, the deputy head of the company's management, Vladimir Kulakovsky, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday. The initiative has been discussed since the terrorist attack at Moscow’s Domodedovo airport on January 24, in which 36 people were killed. Railway officials proposed regulations on railway stations.

Blast in Dagestan did not affect railway traffic

A blast in Dagestan this morning did not affect the schedule of railway traffic between Azerbaijan and Russia, head of the press-service of the Azerbaijani Railways Company Nadir Azmamedov said. He said that the only train from Baku is currently on its way to Tyumen and has not reached the Russian border yet. The Moscow-Baku train will arrive this evening. Azmamedov said that no limitations were introduced in Russia.

60 metal detectors to be installed in train stations in Russia

The leadership of Russian Railways plans to install about 60 metaldetectors at all the railway stations in Moscow and St. Petersburg inthe next 2-3 days, the deputy chief of the railways, Vladimir Yeremin,told journalists, RIA Novosti reports.After having visited Kiev railway station in Moscow on Thursday,Russian President Dmitry Medvedev criticized security measures on therailways and instructed the head of the railways to bring order to thesecurity of rail transport and to report the results.
